GUODDI Exhibition

Ann-Sofie Kallok, duojár and designer, has created a collection of works against the background of the interdisciplinary collaboration for "Guoddi", a performance built at the intersection between Sámi tradition and modern art.

The guiding theme for the project is avant-garde, to relate to creation in an innovative and experimental way with the aim of conveying Sámi identity and culture beyond the traditional norms. By having an open and experimental approach to her work, Kallok has been able to explore new materials, techniques and forms of expression, while at the same time she has challenged conventional boundaries within duodji.

The avant-garde duodji elements determined the direction of a new and exciting artistic landscape. In collaboration with dancer Ánna-Katri Helander, composer Anthoni Hætta and dancer Sebastian Björkman, Kallok has created an interweaving of dance and music in a way that elevates the elements into a powerful, challenging and multidimensional performance.

Guoddi, a word from the Northern Sámi language that means someone who carries, in this context becomes a metaphor for the role of the dancers in the performance - the carrying of body elements that symbolize pride and strength, but also the weight and burden that can entail carrying on a indigenous culture. Guoddi is thus a central element in this performance, a bearer of cultural identity and history.

“Guoddi” was commissioned for Dáiddadállu 10 anniversary in 2024.
